Business acumen simulations people enjoy, remember and use
A business acumen simulation puts teams in charge of a simulated company. They set prices, invest, hire and compete, then see the impact of each financial decision on the results.
Smart people, missing the bigger picture
Ask a sales director what a 5% discount does to margin, or an operations manager why finance worries about inventory, and you’ll often get a shrug. They’re smart people. Nobody ever showed them how their piece connects to the whole.
What participants practice
Participants don’t just see the theory. They get hands-on experience applying it.
Pricing: set prices and watch volume, margin and market share respond.
Investment: decide between growth, capacity and holding cash, and live with the result.
Tradeoffs: weigh the big customer’s discount request against the quarter’s profit.
Who it’s for
New managers: Moving from doing the work to owning results means learning how the business keeps score.
High-potentials: Future leaders learn to think across the whole business, not just their function.
Sales teams: Sellers who understand their customer’s business, and their own company’s margins, win better deals and protect profit.

How to get the most from a business acumen simulation
Don’t boil the ocean. Chances are, you don’t need to teach business acumen too deeply. Even going as far as a statement of cash flows is likely too deep. Same goes for the simulation: keep it focused and usable.
Connect it to their world. In the debrief, map the simulation’s numbers back to your own P&L and metrics.
Debrief the tradeoffs, not the scoreboard. The learning is in why teams chose what they did, not who finished first. Talk about the tradeoffs in numbers and how they play out across the enterprise.
Mix it up. Combine a wide variety of groups and functions in the class. Mix up the groups within the sim. Sales has something to teach marketing, marketing has something to teach operations, and so on.
Have fun. Let’s be real: Business acumen training is not on the top of many people’s bucket list. Surprise the participants and have fun with the training. Undo a couple of buttons and let loose. People will retain more.
What our clients say
Common questions
What is a business acumen simulation?
A business acumen simulation is a hands-on exercise in which teams run a simulated company, make financial and strategic decisions, and see the results in real financial statements. Simulation Studios has built and facilitated them since 2003.
How is a business acumen simulation different from a finance for non-finance managers course?
A course explains financial terms. A simulation makes participants use them under pressure, with competitors and consequences, which builds judgment rather than vocabulary.
Who facilitates Simulation Studios simulations?
Every Simulation Studios simulation is executive-led, facilitated by a former executive who has run a P&L, not a trainer reading from a script.
Can a business acumen simulation run on our own business model?
Yes. A Tailored simulation from Simulation Studios is adapted to your business model, industry and financial drivers, so participants practice on numbers that look like their own.
